KZN designers
eclipsed at Vodacom Durban July Fashion Challenge judging
Durban -
Designers from outside of KwaZulu-Natal edged out all the local hopefuls
when the judges decided on the ten finalists for the Vodacom Durban July
Fashion Challenge,
brought to you by Canon, from a record number of entries.
“The line-up in the Fashion Challenge this year will be largely
unfamiliar, which gives the competition a fresh new perspective,” said
fashion programme director Tiffany Prior. Prominent in the list of ten
finalists however was former Young Designer winner Lara Klawikowski from Cape
Town.
The judging process was an open dialogue amongst the diverse panel, which
included Derrick Mhlongo, Monica Holman of Gold Circle, Tiffany Prior and
acclaimed designers Terrence Bray and Leigh Schubert.
The judges only considered designs that fully embraced the evocative theme “A
Material World”, including headgear and well thought out accessories. With
this environmentally-friendly theme, judges anticipated an array of
recycled pieces, which made garment design and execution more important
than before.
